From November 6–9 in 2007, Spirit perched near the western edge of “home plate”; its panoramic camera, Pancam, combined three images of 735, 535, and 432 nm to produce a true color view of Gusev Crater (see Fig. 7.12) and a false-color stretch (see Fig. 7.13) to bring out subtle color differences.

During its 952nd sol, or Martian day, Opportunity’s Pancam produced an approximately true color rendition (see Fig. 7.14) of the promontory Cabo Frio in Victoria Crater, from which it is easy to understand Mars’s nickname as the Red Planet.
